BRAIN INJURY AND HEALING
IN AN INSTANT
In an instant, an injury to the brain can cause changes that last a lifetime. A blow to the head, a blast from an
explosive device, or a stroke can all cause brain injury. Immediate symptoms can include obvious difficulties with
movements or language. More commonly and more subtly, a brain injury may affect an individual's ability to focus and
sustain attention, think, remember, process, and organize information efficiently and effectively. These changes may
be invisible to outside observers, but can have a major impact on the injured person's ability to hold a job, maintain
relationships, and carry out common activities of daily living.
HEALING MEANS LEARNING
After the first instant of injury, the brain does not remain in a static, injured state, but starts trying to repair
itself almost immediately. The human brain is made to change -- and for the brain, healing involves learning. Our job
is to enhance this learning through very specific types of training. Specialized clinical teams work to address some
of the many aspects of what it means to be a healthy human being. We strive to help each person re-establish connections
that have been torn asunder -- whether between brain regions, or between an individual and his/her community.
OUR GOAL
FINDING BETTER TREATMENTS: Through active research programs, we work to improve the healing treatments that can be offered
when someone is injured. The combination of caring and innovation are at the core of our mission.
There are many challenges and questions that do not yet have answers. We hope that by working together, we will make progress
in the battle to improve care for our fellow human beings.
