Research at NCIRE

NCIRE-The Veterans Health Research Institute is the leading private nonprofit institute devoted to Veterans health research in the United States. Our mission is to advance Veterans health through research.

We support the work of some of the nation's foremost physicians and scientists at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the premier biomedical research facility in the VA system. All have faculty appointments at the University of California, San Francisco, which has its own proud traditions of research and patient care. We also partner with the U.S. Department of Defense to support health research on behalf of our men and women in the Armed Forces.

Those who have served in uniform have given their best for their country. In return, we believe that they deserve nothing less than the best health care research we can provide.

MiRNA and Long Non-coding RNA in Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in human. Since lack of VDR predisposes skin to tumor formation when challenged by environmental (such as UVB irradiation) or chemical insults, or even develops spontaneous skin tumors when combine with lack of calcium sensor receptor in our murine models, genetics or epigenetic factors involved in this process are under extensive investigation. These include critical pathways such as sonic hedgehog and wnt/β-catenin pathways, which closely interact with VDR and when dysregulated also produce skin tumor. MiRNA and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) are another major focus of epigenetic mechanisms in skin carcinogenesis, in which their emerging roles as a hallmark of cancer has become better appreciated. Results from these studies will help us to understand the underlying mechanism, hence to find new methods to prevent the development of skin cancer in predisposed veterans, to identify early diagnostic tools and potential new therapeutic regime.
