On May 30, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee  announced that the San Francisco VA Medical Center will open a 42,000 square foot research center in Mission Bay.

The 10-year lease at 1700 Owens Street is adjacent to The Gladstone Institutes building and across the street from UCSF’s Mission Bay Campus.  The site’s proximity to UCSF and the vibrant Mission Bay life sciences community is an ideal location for SFVAMC research programs, noted Carl Grunfeld, MD, PhD, SFVAMC Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development.

“Expanding our research program to 1700 Owens is significant because it gives us the opportunity to continue the existing collaboration and partnership with our research counterparts at UCSF,” said Dr. Grunfeld. “It is because of this close collaboration that we have facilitated important advancements in medicine and research that form the cornerstone of our reputation for excellence in health care.”

“NCIRE – The Veterans Health Research Institute has been working with SFVAMC leadership to establish an expanded research presence for some time, “ said NCIRE Executive Director Robert E. Obana. “It is extremely satisfying to see this goal realized at this critical time for the VA and for Veterans health research. In the coming months and years, we look forward to working with SFVAMC leaders and investigators in helping SFVAMC’s initial program presence at Mission Bay grow even more.”
