The American Psychiatric Association (APA) joined San Francisco VA Medical Center Director Bonnie Graham to present the 2013 APA Psychiatric Services Silver Achievement Award to City College of San Francisco (CCSF) Chancellor Dr. Arthur Tyler. Both SFVAMC and CCSF were recognized for the successful establishment of our Veterans Outreach Program at CCSF. This program was recognized for providing accessible mental health services for Veterans enrolled in college, and gives Veterans access to a supportive network of on-campus peers. In accepting the award, Chancellor Tyler touted the important relationship between SFVAMC and City College.  He praised the Medical Center for its efforts to create the Veterans Outreach Program and for bringing care to student Veterans.

“Really a lot of the credit for receiving this award goes to Ellen Herbst, MD, Psychiatrist, and her work,” said Keith Armstrong, LCSW, Director of the Veterans Outreach Program at CCSF. “This award signifies a successful marriage between two institutions (SFVAMC and CCSF) that have both kept student Veterans at the forefront.”

The Veterans Outreach Program was selected from among 27 applications reviewed by the 2013 Achievement Awards committee. The APA is a national medical society whose physician members specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and research of mental illnesses, including substance use disorders.  The Veterans Outreach Program staff include: Keith Armstrong, Ellen Herbst, Bridget Leach, Shannon McCaslin, Brandina Jersky, Gerard Choucroun, Isaac Ramos and Morris Karo.
